The City To Sea Races, organised by Winding Paths, took place on the same day. There were 3 race options to choose from, half marathon, marathon, and 50km ultra. The race started at the Exeter quayside, following the Exe estuary to Dawlish Warren and on to Shaldon. This section of approximately 30km is very flat and on good paths. From Shaldon to the finish of the 50km ultra at Babbacombe it is the complete opposite! Massive hills on off-road trails in this section made up nearly all of the elevation for the entire race. A definite sting in the tail! Three HRC members set off together for the 50km ultra. Rebecca Stevens, Tim Pepper, and Hadleigh Davies. They set a good early pace on the easier section of the course making great progress. As they reached a split at 20 miles for the ultra and marathon, Tim decided that he would take the marathon route as he was not feeling too good. Rebecca and Hadleigh went on to complete the ultra. As the course got hillier, Hadleigh pulled away from Rebecca but Rebecca kept at it and at the end there were only 2 minutes separating them. Hadleigh finished the ultra in 11th place with a time of 6 hours 10minutes, Rebecca hot on his heels finishing 1 place behind him in 6:12. She came 3rd lady overall.. A huge achievement for them both. Tim finished the marathon in 50th place with a time of 5:47. Another fantastic achievement, especially as Tim didn’t feel great from the start but kept going to finish the marathon.
