Otter Rail and River Run 10k

On Saturday, 5th July, several Honiton Running Club members travelled the short distance to Tipton St John to take part in the Otter Rail and River Run 10k. The weather was perfect for running, much more conducive to racing than the heat wave of recent days. As the name suggests, the race is run along the banks of the River Otter and through the wooded area of the old railway line. Apart from  a small section of road the terrain Is mainly off road. The recent dry weather did create hazards of its own, however, with hard ground and rutted areas. Running beside the river and on the old railway line meant for a much flatter than usual race for East Devon.

The race was won by Richard Hardy in 36 minutes 59 seconds. First back for HRC was Ellie Dominey. She came 1st lady overall, 13th place in 42:12. Jo Buxton followed coming 34th in 48:21 and she was followed soon after by Howard Bidmead who came 39th in 48:49 winning a slate coaster, an Otter Rail and River glass and a fruit drink for coming first in his age category. This was the furthest Mark Newson had run in over a year so he did well to come 55th in 51:52. Judy Davey had led the trail ahead of Paula Ferris throughout the race but a quick glance back by Judy with just 300 metres to go, meant the race was on! Judy and Paula eventually crossed the line together after a serious sprint session. They came 64th in 52:58 with Paula winning her age category. Emma Davey finished the line-up for HRC coming 82nd in 55:57. There were 264 finishers.

Four year old Edward Sweetman took part in the children’s fun run, running with Janice Newson,  thoroughly enjoying himself.  In summary, it was a great family village event with a fantastic atmosphere.
